Media Release

NGO Statement Concerning the Hiroshima Meeting of the International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament

The International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND), an initiative of the Australian and Japanese governments, held its fourth meeting in Hiroshima from October 17 to 20 2009. It is expected that it will release its report in the near future.

After the Hiroshima meeting, the Co-chairs (Gareth Evans of Australia and Yoriko Kawaguchi of Japan) held press conferences in which they outlined the meeting's main outcomes. Unfortunately, their comments were a great disappointment to the representatives of civil society who have engaged with the Commission over the past year.

In response to the Co-chairs' comments, members of Australian, Japanese and international NGOs who have followed the ICNND process issued a statement today.
